Located in northwest Cobb County, Acworth is home to lakes Acworth and Allatoona, earning the nickname “The Lake City.” Lake Allatoona is the result of a dam built on the Etowah River. Residents were scared the land near the town would become a swamp as a result of it, and demanded a second dam in 1950, resulting in the new lake Acworth. The sights are now considered the two most significant tourist attractions of the city.
Like many other cities in the county, Acworth was formed after the Native American were forcibly removed from the area, per the Indian Removal Act signed by President Andrew Jackson in 1831. Joseph L. Gregg, an engineer at Western & Atlantic Railroad named the city in 1843 after his hometown in New Hampshire. The Western & Atlantic Railroad was completed back in 1840, is one of the primary sources of jobs in the city.
Today, the city of Acworth paints a rather wholesome picture, with a picturesque downtown, and districts that seem to be a still moment in time. The historic district is filled with authentic memorabilia of the 19th century that gather many curious tourists each year especially during the summer.
